The first order of business on Friday night was to prepare the Bus for the next day's trip to Conde's in Harrisburg about twenty miles north of Eugene. Phil, Jan, George, Mudder and Really? painted their straw hats with the ubiquitous flourescents that were on strewn about on a long wooden table in front of the Bus barn. It was the midst of summer, the weather was dry as a bone Oregon hot!
The daytime temperature would be close to a hundred. The nightime offered a view of the Milky Way and Big Dipper like you have never seen!
Kesey methodically directed the creation of a Bus size canopy to protect the Pranksters from the impending Saturday heat. It would also add to the Bus as Art because ITSART!.
Three large parachutes were laid out on the lawn upon which Kesey and Roy painted cascading lightning bolts large enough to rival the awe inspiring nightime Oregon sky. As the sun began setting, the Pranksters began cooling down, putting the tops on the paint cans, cleaning the brushes, laying out their costumes for the big day tomorrow,
quaffing their cold drinks, laying on of the encouraging words, attempting for a good night's sleep, knowing the big day is only hours away.
